IPP of the Year — Indonesia at the Asian Power Awards 2025

Malaysia, October 2025 - PT Huadian Bukit Asam Power (HBAP) has once again made a proud achievement on the international stage. At the Asian Power Awards 2025, HBAP won the Independent Power Producer of the Year - Indonesia award. This award is clear evidence of HBAP's success in developing and operating the MT Sumsel-8 or Tanjung Lalang coal-fired power plant, located in Tanjung Lalang, Muara Enim Regency, South Sumatra.

With an installed capacity of 2x660 MW, the Tanjung Lalang Power Plant is currently the largest steam power plant in Sumatra and the largest mine-mouth power plant in Indonesia. Since commencing commercial operations on October 7, 2023, this power plant has demonstrated outstanding performance by achieving zero forced outages, setting a new standard for power plant operational reliability in the Sumatra region.

This reliability is supported by the application of advanced equipment design, construction standardization, and an integrated control system (Distributed Control System) that enables real-time precision monitoring and equipment condition diagnostics. The superior performance of the Tanjung Lalang PLTU was also proven during a power outage in the Sumatra system on June 4, 2024. It was still able to supply around 300–350 MW per unit to maintain the stability of the southern Sumatra power system.

In addition to being operationally reliable, HBAP is also strongly committed to energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. The Tanjung Lalang Power Plant uses supercritical boiler technology that can reduce coal consumption per unit of electricity and lower CO₂ emission intensity compared to conventional power plants.

The application of environmentally friendly technologies such as low NOx burners, electrostatic precipitators (ESP), and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) has helped this power plant reduce NOx emissions by 6.76% or around 1,120 tons per year. All emissions are also continuously monitored using a Continuous Emission Monitoring System (CEMS).

The award from the Asian Power Awards, known as the “Oscars” of the Asian power industry, is recognition of HBAP's innovation, reliability, and contribution to supporting national energy security while maintaining environmental sustainability.
